I gave this little (6″x8″) dress painting to Jennifer this week. It’s maybe 5 years old. I was obsessed with the incredible Nick Dewar (RIP, talented sir) at the time I made it, which is obvious if you know his work (flat, retro-colorful, hyper-refined details).
Back in the day, my friends Sarah, Jhane and I were gonna use this image as the cover of a non-existent album of our fake band, Les Femmes de Fumée, which is supposed to be French for ‘the women who smoke’ (I dunno, I took sign language in high school). We were determined to legitimately get booked as some sort of backing act as rhythmically synchronized smokers. Brilliant, I know, but we tragically never got our shit together with that. Also, it’s always reminded me of ‘Summer Dress’ by the Red House Painters, which my college boyfriend put on almost every mixtape he ever made me. I HAD SO MANY FEELINGS TO THAT SONG.
